Killer Sudoku for Seniors: How to Start (Printable Sample)

Last updated: .

Killer Sudoku for seniors works best when the page is generous: one big grid, readable sums and instructions that do not need a magnifying glass. The puzzle itself is a good fit for people who like both numbers and logic, because it replaces the starting digits of classic Sudoku with small additions. This article explains what changes when a Killer Sudoku is printed in large print, with the exact sizes used by LogikLand.

Why Killer Sudoku suits many seniors

A Killer Sudoku has the same rules as a classic one: rows, columns and 3 x 3 boxes hold 1 to 9 once. The difference is that the grid is divided into dotted cages, each with a sum, and no digit repeats inside a cage. That asks for patience and arithmetic more than for speed, and the puzzle can be put down and picked up again, because pencil marks keep the work visible.

Two features make it comfortable. First, there is no trivia and no time limit: everything needed is on the page. Second, every LogikLand grid has exactly one solution and can be solved by logic, so nobody has to guess. If you have never played it, the Killer Sudoku rules are explained with a picture.

The large print version of the Killer Sudoku is a setting of the same assistant, reached from the Seniors tab. It changes the title size and the instruction pages. We calculated the sizes of the grid from the layout code for the two page formats.

Page and grids per pageCell sizeCage sum (smallest text)
8.5 x 11 in, 1 grid56 pt (19.8 mm)13.4 pt
8.5 x 11 in, 2 grids32.9 pt (11.6 mm)7.9 pt
6 x 9 in, 1 grid36 pt (12.7 mm)8.6 pt
6 x 9 in, 2 grids24.9 pt (8.8 mm)6 pt
Calculated from the layout code for 0.75 inch margins. A cell is one square of the 9 x 9 grid.

The cage sum is the smallest text of the page, so it decides how comfortable the puzzle is. With one grid on an 8.5 x 11 inch page it prints at 13.4 points. With two grids, or on a 6 x 9 inch page, it is much smaller. For readers who need large print, our suggestion, not a rule: use 8.5 x 11 inches with one grid per page.

What the senior setting changes

  • Grid titles are printed at 28 points instead of 24, and shrink only if the title is very long.
  • The "How to play" pages use large text: 17 points for the body, 21 for headings on 8.5 x 11 inch pages (15 and 18 points on 6 x 9).
  • The solutions default to 2 per page and there is no 6-per-page option.
  • The default book title is "Large Print Killer Sudoku".

A grid to try

Below is an easy Killer Sudoku made by the generator, with its solution. Easy grids have cages of up to 3 cells, so most sums can be tested quickly in your head.

Getting started without frustration

  1. Print the grid and use a soft pencil with an eraser. The method needs small notes in the corners of the cells.
  2. Fill the cages of one cell first. Their sum is the digit.
  3. Learn four sums that have only one answer for two cells: 3 is 1 and 2, 4 is 1 and 3, 16 is 7 and 9, 17 is 8 and 9.
  4. Add the cages inside a box and subtract from 45: if one cell is left, you have its digit.
  5. Stop when you are tired. A solved half is easy to continue the next day.

The step-by-step Killer Sudoku method shows these moves on a real grid.

Planning a large print book

In the Large Print Killer Sudoku assistant you choose one level or several, the number of grids, grids per page, solutions per page, the page size and the margins. The estimated page count is shown while you set it up. Here is the arithmetic for 30 easy grids, one per page, with solutions two per page, and the detailed "How to play" guide:

  • 8.5 x 11 inches: 1 title page, 3 guide pages, 30 grids, 1 "Solutions" page and 15 solution pages, which is 50 pages.
  • 6 x 9 inches: the guide takes 4 pages, so the same book is 51 pages.

That matters because the FREE plan of the app allows 50 pages per book at the time of writing (PRO 100, EXPERT 200), so in 6 x 9 inches you would make 29 grids instead of 30. Check the current limits on the pricing page. Books made on the FREE plan are for personal use; commercial rights come with the PRO and EXPERT plans.

Questions

Is Killer Sudoku harder than classic Sudoku?

It asks for a different skill. There are no starting digits, so the early moves come from adding small numbers, but the easy level uses small cages of up to 3 cells and every grid can be solved by logic without guessing.

Which level should I choose for a first large print book?

Our suggestion, not a rule: the easy level, because its cages have at most 3 cells and many sums have only one answer. Add a medium section later if readers ask for more.

Can I print one grid per page?

Yes, and it is the default. For Killer Sudoku the assistant offers 1 or 2 grids per page, never more, because the cage sums must stay readable.
