These printable easy word scramble puzzles are a free PDF of six puzzles with eight words each, 48 words in all. Every word has 3 to 5 letters and the first letter of every answer is already written, which is how the easy level of LogikLand's generator works. The solutions are at the back, and nothing needs to be installed or signed up for.
What is in the free pack
Download the PDF and you get seven letter-size pages: a title page, three puzzle pages with two puzzles each, a Solutions page, and two pages of solutions. Each puzzle has a theme, so the words belong together:
- Puzzle 1: animals (HORSE, BIRD, ZEBRA and others);
- Puzzle 2: food;
- Puzzle 3: nature;
- Puzzle 4: the home;
- Puzzle 5: the body;
- Puzzle 6: school.
The words come from the site's own selection by theme, the one you can pick in the Word Scramble assistant. They were scrambled by the generator, which moves at least half of the letters when it can, never leaves a word in its right order, and never uses a word whose letters could also make another word of the list.
Of the 48 words, 4 have three letters, 23 have four and 21 have five. Three-letter words are quick wins, and with the five-letter words the given first letter matters most, because it fixes the start of the longest words on the page.
Four of the six puzzles
The first four are shown below with their blank lines. The solutions are in the PDF.
How to play an easy scramble
Each row has a number on the left and the scrambled letters in boxes. On the right are the answer lines: the first letter is already written, followed by one blank line for each remaining letter. The number of lines tells you the length of the answer before you start, so you can rule out any word of the wrong length.
Take the second word of puzzle 1, RBID, with B written on the first line. Cross the B out of the letters: R, I and D are left. A word that starts with B and has a vowel next is probably BI-something. Try the three letters in the order I, R, D and you have BIRD.
Now a three-letter word, WOL, with O given. Once O is crossed out, only W and L are left, so there are only two orders: OWL or OLW. Only one is a word. Three-letter scrambles are a good first step for a child because there is almost nothing to decide.
Tricks that work at this level
- Look for letter pairs that often go together, such as TH, CH and OO, and treat each pair as one block.
- Think of the theme. In puzzle 3 (nature), a scramble that contains O, C, E, A and N is likely to be OCEAN.
- If a word will not come, move to the next one. Every solved word is a useful letter pattern.
Ideas for using the pages
These are our suggestions, not rules:
- Solo warm-up. One puzzle of eight words is a short session. Do one before a harder puzzle.
- Two players. Print two copies of the same puzzle, and see who finishes first, or who needs fewer erasings.
- Theme talk. After a puzzle, ask each player to add one more word that fits the theme. It turns a worksheet into a conversation.
- Check together. Read the answers aloud from the solution page, then count how many you solved without looking.
Tip
Write the answer in pencil on the blank lines, and say it aloud. A word you can say is a word you probably know.
For a longer explanation of the method, read how to solve a word scramble, and for the exact rules see the word scramble rules.
Printing and using the pages
The pages are US letter size. Print at 100 % ("actual size"). Our suggestion, not a rule: print the puzzle pages without the solution pages, and keep the solutions for the person who sets the puzzles. The PDF is made for personal use and carries a small LogikLand footer.
Getting more puzzles
LogikLand does not have a free tool that makes a single word scramble. More puzzles are made in the Word Scramble assistant, which you reach after you create a free account. There you choose the levels (easy, medium, hard or expert), 8, 10 or 12 words per puzzle, the themes, and the number of puzzles. A book is built with a title page, an optional how-to page, the puzzles, and the solutions at 1 to 4 to a page. For children, the next article in this series, word scramble for kids, explains which settings to choose. For the next step up in difficulty, see advanced word scramble techniques.
Questions
Why is the first letter already written?
At the easy and medium levels of the LogikLand generator the first letter of every answer is given. It removes the question of where the word starts, which is the hardest part for a beginner.
Is the pack for children?
It suits children who can read short words, and adults who want a quick warm-up. The words are common ones such as HORSE, SOUP and CHALK.
Can there be two right answers to one scramble?
No. A word is never used if another word of the list is made of the same letters, so each scramble has one answer.
