The rules of a word scramble fit in one line: the letters of a word have been mixed up, and you put them back in order. The skill is in how you search. This page gives the exact rules, solves a real six-word puzzle step by step, and explains how LogikLand builds each level so you know what to expect from a puzzle.
What a word scramble is
A word scramble, also called an anagram puzzle or jumble, shows a word whose letters are in the wrong order next to a row of blank lines. Each blank line is one letter of the answer. The puzzle usually has a list of six to twelve words, which makes it a good page for a quiet moment because each answer takes under a minute.
The rules
- The answer uses exactly the letters shown, each one once, in a different order.
- There is one blank line per letter, so the lines tell you how long the answer is.
- In the easier levels, the first letter is already written on the first line. Cross it out of the scrambled letters.
- The answer is a word of the language of the book, written without spaces.
- Accents are part of the word: a letter with an accent in the scramble has the same accent in the answer.
A worked example
This is a medium puzzle made by the LogikLand generator. In a medium puzzle the words have 5 to 7 letters and the first letter is given. The solution is shown next to it.
Solving ICHNTKE
- The first line already shows K. Cross K out of ICHNTKE. Six letters are left: I, C, H, N, T, E.
- C and H sit next to each other in many English words (CHAIR, KITCHEN, TEACH). Treat CH as one block. Four letters are left: I, N, T, E.
- A word that begins with K and has seven letters probably starts K + vowel. Try the block IT after the K, then CH, then the common ending EN: K + IT + CH + EN is KITCHEN, and every letter has been used once.
A harder one: TEALNP
The given letter is P. Cross it out and you keep T, E, A, L, N. Look for an ending first: -ET is common and leaves A, L, N for the middle. P + LAN + ET gives PLANET. If your first ending does not work, change it: the letters are the same, only the blocks change.
Tip
Write the leftover letters in a circle on a piece of paper. A circle has no beginning, so your eye stops reading them in the wrong order.
The four levels
The Word Scramble assistant has four levels. The numbers below are the ones the generator uses.
| Level | Word length | First letter given |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 3 to 5 letters | Yes |
| Medium | 5 to 7 letters | Yes |
| Hard | 6 to 9 letters | No |
| Expert | 8 to 12 letters | No |
Two things make a longer word harder than a short one. There are many more orders of the same letters, and without a given first letter you must decide where the word starts. At the hard and expert levels, start from the pieces you recognise: endings such as -ING or -ION, and blocks such as TH, SH or QU.
What makes a fair scramble
A scramble is only fun if the answer is unique and the mix is real. LogikLand applies three rules when it builds a puzzle:
- At least half of the letters change place when the word allows it, so a word is never left almost in order.
- A scramble is never identical to its answer.
- A word is not used if another word of the list has the same letters, so there is only one right answer. If LISTEN and SILENT were both in the list, neither would be used.
When you write scrambles by hand, check the last rule yourself. It is the one people forget, and it is the one that produces complaints from solvers.
Making a full book
LogikLand has no free single-puzzle tool for word scrambles. To make a book, create a free account and use the Word Scramble assistant. Our suggestion, not a rule: print the first puzzle yourself and solve it with a pencil before you choose the number of words per puzzle. You will feel at once whether 8, 10 or 12 words fits your readers.
In the assistant you pick the levels and how many puzzles each level gets, 8, 10 or 12 words per puzzle, and 1 to 4 solutions per page. You can use the large word list or the shorter selection sorted by theme, and you can add your own words. When you use the large word list, the easy and medium levels draw only from its most common words, so the simplest puzzles stay readable.

Questions
Is there an answer for every scramble?
Yes, and only one. LogikLand never uses a word if another word of its list is made of the same letters, so a solver is never left choosing between two valid answers.
Do accents count?
In French, Spanish, German and Italian puzzles, accented letters are kept. If a box shows É, the answer has an É at that place.
How many words are in one puzzle?
In the Word Scramble assistant you choose 8, 10 or 12 words for each puzzle.
