How to make a crossword puzzle in 4 steps
- Choose a theme. A school lesson, a holiday, a hobby or a family event: a theme helps the solver guess the answers.
- Type your words and clues. One per line, the word first, then a colon, then the clue.
- Generate the grid. The tool crosses your words and numbers the squares. Click again to get another layout.
- Print it. Download the PDF: the puzzle and its clues are on page 1 and the solution on page 2.
Tips for a good crossword
- Mix long and short words. Two or three long words give the others more places to cross.
- Choose words with common letters (A, E, R, S, T). Words full of rare letters such as Q, X or Z are hard to cross.
- For an easy crossword, write direct clues such as a short definition. For a harder one, use a synonym or a general knowledge question.
- Keep each clue short, under 80 characters, so that all the clues fit on one printed page.
Printable crosswords for the classroom, for kids and for seniors
Teachers use a custom crossword to review vocabulary, spelling lists or the key terms of a lesson: the words are the answers and the definitions are the clues. Parents make one for a birthday or a rainy day, with the names of family members and pets.
For seniors, an easy crossword with familiar words and clear clues is a pleasant daily exercise. Print the PDF on a full letter page to keep the squares large and comfortable to fill in.

Crossword puzzle maker: frequently asked questions
How do I make my own crossword puzzle?
Type your words in the box above, one per line, each followed by a colon and its clue, for example "APPLE: A red or green fruit". Click Generate crossword and LogikLand crosses your words in a numbered grid, with the Across and Down clues below. You can then download a PDF with the solution on a second page.
Is this crossword puzzle maker free?
Yes. The crossword maker on this page is free and needs no account. It creates one puzzle at a time with up to 20 words. The PDF carries a small LogikLand footer and is for personal use. To make complete crossword books, with many puzzles and print-ready pages, use the LogikLand dashboard.
How many words can I use?
The free maker accepts up to 20 words of 2 to 15 letters. Each word must share at least one letter with another word, so that they can cross. If a word cannot be placed, the tool tells you which one.
Why was one of my words not placed?
A word is left out when it has no letter in common with the words already in the grid, when it is longer than 15 letters, or when it appears twice in your list. Add a few words with common letters such as A, E, R or S, or click Generate new grid to try another layout.
How do I make an easy crossword for kids or seniors?
Use 8 to 12 short, familiar words and write direct clues, such as a definition or a missing word in a sentence. For children, choose words from one theme they know, like animals or food. For seniors, print the PDF at full page size so the squares and the clues stay easy to read.
Can I sell the crosswords I create?
The free samples from this page are for personal use. Commercial rights, which you need to publish and sell books on Amazon KDP, Etsy or your own website, come with the PRO and EXPERT plans.
Does it work with accents and special characters?
Accents are removed and letters are shown in capitals, so "ete" and "été" give the same word. Numbers, spaces and symbols inside a word are ignored. Your clues are printed exactly as you type them.
