How to Create a Crossword Book for Amazon KDP

The crossword generator is part of the PRO and EXPERT plans, which also include the commercial rights you need to sell your books on Amazon KDP. Words and clues come from built-in word lists in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian.

   Book settings

   Choose the language, enter your book title, select the page size (8.5 x 11 inches or 6 x 9 inches) and decide whether to include a “How to Play” page. The language you choose also sets the language of the words and clues.

   Puzzles

   Choose Single level or Multi-level. Set the number of puzzles, the difficulty (easy, medium or hard) and the grid size, from 11x11 up to 21x21. In multi-level mode you set the number of puzzles and the grid size for each difficulty.

   Layout

   Choose whether the clues sit on the same page as the grid, or whether the grid and the clues use facing pages. Then choose how levels are shown (in the title, with separator pages, or numbers only) and set the margins.

   Generate, edit and export

   Click Generate Book. The solution grids are added at the end of the book. Your project opens in the visual editor, where you can adjust texts and layout, then download the book as a PDF or an editable PPTX file.

The difficulty level changes how many letters are already placed in the grid. The “How to Play” page of your book explains these levels to your readers.

  Easy: the first and the last letter of each word are already placed in the grid.

• M

  Medium: the first letter of each word is already placed in the grid.

• H

  Hard: no hint is given. Solvers rely only on the clues.

• A larger grid leaves more room for words. If the wizard cannot generate your puzzles, increase the grid size.
• Use facing pages to give the grid more space: the grid is on one page and the clues on the next.
• Use Multi-level mode to offer easy, medium and hard crosswords in the same book.
• Amazon KDP margin requirements depend on your trim size and page count. Check the official KDP guidelines and preview your file in the KDP previewer before publishing.
