What large print means in these PDFs

  • Large clues. The clues are printed in 16 to 18 point type, in black on white.
  • Big squares. Each square is about half an inch wide (11 to 14 mm), with room to write a capital letter.
  • One puzzle per page. The grid and its clues are on the same sheet, so there is no page to turn.
  • Short puzzles. 9 words per grid, with the number of letters given after each clue.

Tips for printing and solving

  • Print at 100% or with "Fit to page", one page per sheet, to keep the letters large.
  • Use a soft pencil or a pen with a thick tip, which is easier to read than a fine point.
  • Start with the clues you know right away: each answer gives a letter of another word.
  • Check the number of squares against the number of letters shown after the clue.

How large is the print?

In the PDFs, the clues are printed in 16 to 18 point type, the title in 24 point type, and the squares of the grid are about half an inch wide (11 to 14 mm). Each puzzle fits on a single page, with the grid at the top and the clues below.

Are these crosswords suitable for seniors?

They were made for easy reading and relaxed solving: 9 common words per puzzle, one everyday theme, short and direct clues, and the number of letters given after each clue. There are no abbreviations and no wordplay.

Do the PDFs include the answers?

Yes. Each PDF has the puzzle on page 1 and the solution on page 2, in the same large size. The complete pack has 12 pages: the 6 puzzles first, then the 6 solutions.

How do I keep the print large when I print?

Print on US Letter or A4 paper at 100% or with the "Fit to page" option. Do not use "Multiple pages per sheet" or booklet printing, which would make the letters smaller.

What kind of crossword is this?

These are criss-cross crosswords: the words cross each other freely in an open grid, with numbered Across and Down clues. They are not the dense square grids found in daily newspapers, where every letter belongs to two words.
