How to make a cryptogram in 4 steps

  1. Write your message. A wish, a riddle, a clue or a line of your own, from 10 letters to 300 characters.
  2. Choose the code. Letters for a classic cryptogram, numbers for a version that is easier to read.
  3. Set the hints. Give 0 to 5 letters. The more hints, the easier the puzzle.
  4. Print it. Download the PDF: the puzzle is on page 1 and the solution on page 2.

How a cryptogram works

A cryptogram hides a message behind a substitution code. Every letter of the alphabet gets one code, a letter or a number, and that code is used each time the letter appears. The spaces and the punctuation stay where they are, so the shape of the words remains visible.

  • In the letter code, no letter stands for itself.
  • The puzzle comes with a key table of the 26 codes, where the solver writes each letter as it is found.
  • The solution page shows the decoded message and the complete key.

Tips to solve a cryptogram

  • Start with the one-letter words: in English they are almost always A or I.
  • Look at the short words. Common two- and three-letter words such as OF, TO, IN, THE and AND are good first guesses.
  • Count the codes. The code that appears most often is frequently E, T or A.
  • Check the apostrophes: the letter after one is often S or T.
  • Write each letter you find in the key table, then copy it everywhere its code appears.

Ideas for using a cryptogram

  • A greeting card or an invitation with a message to decode.
  • A classroom activity where the message is a sentence from the lesson.
  • A treasure hunt or an escape game where the message gives the next clue.
  • A puzzle page for a newsletter or a family gathering.

Cryptogram maker: frequently asked questions

How do I make my own cryptogram?

Type your message in the tool above, choose a letter code or a number code, decide how many letters to give as hints, and click Generate cryptogram. LogikLand replaces each letter of your message with a code. You can then download a PDF with the puzzle on page 1 and the solution on page 2.

What is a cryptogram?

A cryptogram is a message written in a simple code: each letter of the alphabet is replaced by another letter, or by a number, and the same letter is always replaced by the same code. The solver works out which code stands for which letter to read the message.

Is this cryptogram maker free?

Yes. The tool on this page is free and needs no account. It creates one puzzle at a time from a message of up to 300 characters. The PDF carries a small LogikLand footer and is for personal use.

What is the difference between the letter code and the number code?

With the letter code, each letter is replaced by a different letter, and no letter stands for itself. With the number code, each letter is replaced by a number from 1 to 26, in a random order. The number code is often easier to read for beginners.

How do the hints work?

You can give up to 5 letters as hints. The tool chooses the letters that appear most often in your message, writes them in the puzzle and lists them under it. With no hint the puzzle is harder. At least 3 letters always stay hidden.

How long should the message be?

At least 10 letters and at most 300 characters. A longer message gives the solver more repeated letters to work with, so it is usually easier to solve than a very short one.

What happens to punctuation, numbers and accents?

Punctuation, apostrophes and numbers are kept as you typed them and are not coded. Accents are removed and letters are shown in capitals, so "é" becomes "E".

Will I get the same code twice?

No. Each click on Generate new code creates a new random code for the same message, so you can make several versions of one puzzle.
