What is a killer sudoku?

Killer Sudoku mixes Sudoku with a little addition. The usual rules apply to rows, columns and boxes, and each dotted cage adds up to the small number in its corner, with no digit repeated in the cage.

The level sets the size of the cages. Small cages leave few possible combinations, while large ones leave many, which is what makes the upper levels hard.

How to play Killer Sudoku

  • Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. No digit is given at the start.
  • The grid is divided into cages, outlined with dotted lines. The small number in a cage is the sum of its digits, and a digit cannot appear twice in the same cage.
  • Tip: a row, a column or a box always adds up to 45. Every grid has a single solution.

How to start

Begin with two-square cages that have only one combination. A total of 3 can only be 1 and 2, a total of 4 can only be 1 and 3, a total of 16 can only be 7 and 9, and a total of 17 can only be 8 and 9.

The levels

LevelWhat you get
Easysmall cages (up to 3 squares)
Mediumcages up to 4 squares
Hardcages up to 5 squares
Expertcages up to 6 squares, fewer cages

Tips

  • Remember that every row, column and box adds up to 45. Subtract the cages that fit inside a box to find the value of a square that sticks out.
  • Write the possible combinations in small print beside a cage instead of guessing.
  • Try Easy first, even if you know Sudoku well: reading cages takes a little practice.
