Dot to dot pages look like a simple game, but they practise counting, number order and pencil control at the same time. This article shows how the pages change from age 4 to age 11, with real pages made with the free dot to dot generator.

Counting by 1s for the youngest
The child starts at the star and joins the dots in order. With 10 dots at ages 4-5, the numbers stay small and the picture appears quickly, which keeps young children motivated.

Skip counting and the alphabet
From ages 7-8 the numbers jump: 2, 4, 6… then 5, 10, 15… at ages 8-9. To find the next dot, the child has to know the sequence, which is good practice before the times tables. At ages 9-10 the dots are the letters of the alphabet, and at ages 10-11 there are 40 dots to join.

Tip
Ask the child to guess the picture before joining the dots, then again once it is finished.
Tips
Say the numbers out loud
For skip counting, saying “2, 4, 6…” while drawing helps to remember the sequence.
Color the picture after
Once the outline is finished, the page becomes a coloring page.

Questions
How many dots should a dot to dot have for a 4 year old?
The LogikLand pages for ages 4-5 have 10 dots. They grow to 15 dots at ages 5-6 and 20 at ages 6-7.
Can dot to dot help with the times tables?
Yes. At ages 7-8 the dots count by 2s, and at ages 8-9 by 5s, so the child says the sequence while joining the dots.
Where do the pictures come from?
They are LogikLand drawings made for dot to dot. Lines inside the picture, such as eyes or wheels, are already drawn: only the outline is made of dots.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The answer key shows the finished picture with its name.
