What is a kakuro?

In Kakuro, each run of white squares must add up to the number shown in the grey square beside it, and a digit can never appear twice in the same sum. The crossings between runs do the rest.

Bigger grids and longer sums make the puzzle harder, because more combinations of digits become possible.

How to play Kakuro

  • Fill every white square with a digit from 1 to 9.
  • The grey squares give sums. The number in the top right corner is the sum of the white squares to its right, up to the next grey square. The number in the bottom left corner is the sum of the white squares below it.
  • A digit can never appear twice in the same sum. Every grid has a single solution.

How to start

Begin with sums that have only one combination. Over two squares, 3 can only be 1 and 2, 4 can only be 1 and 3, 16 can only be 7 and 9, and 17 can only be 8 and 9. Then see which digit also fits the crossing sum.

The levels

LevelWhat you get
Easy6 x 6 grid, sums of 2 to 4 squares
Medium8 x 8 grid, sums of 2 to 4 squares
Hard10 x 10 grid, sums of up to 5 squares
Expert12 x 12 grid, sums of up to 5 squares

Tips

  • Over three squares, 6 can only be 1, 2 and 3, and 24 can only be 7, 8 and 9. Those are great places to start.
  • Pencil the possible digits lightly in the corner of each square.
  • A digit can return in another sum on the same row, because the rule applies to each sum, not to the whole line.
