What is a nonogram?

A nonogram is a picture puzzle made of logic. The numbers beside each row and above each column give the lengths of the shaded blocks in that line, and working through the lines reveals the image.

Nonograms are also known under other names, such as Hanjie or griddlers. The grids go from 10 x 10 for a short break to 25 x 25 for a long session.

How to play Nonograms

  • Shade squares to reveal a hidden picture.
  • The numbers to the left of each row and above each column give, in order, the length of the blocks of shaded squares in that line. For example, "3 1" means a block of 3 shaded squares, then, further along, a block of 1. There is at least one empty square between two blocks. A 0 means the line stays empty.
  • Every grid has a single solution, which can be found line by line without guessing.

How to start

Start with the biggest blocks. In a line of 15 squares, a single block of 13 covers the middle squares wherever you slide it, so you can shade those 11 squares right away.

Tips

  • Mark the squares you know are empty with a small dot: they matter as much as the shaded ones.
  • Lines marked 0 stay empty, so cross them off first.
  • Use a pencil, because one wrong block can spread across many lines.
