Diabolical sudoku and evil sudoku: what the levels mean here

There is no official scale for sudoku difficulty, and the same name can describe different levels from one book or website to another. On this page, the level comes from a checking program that solves each grid the way a person does, one technique at a time, starting with the simplest.

  • Diabolical (or diabolic) sudoku. Our solver could not finish the puzzle with singles, locked candidates and subsets (pairs, triples and quads). It needed at least one X-Wing, XY-Wing or Swordfish, and the page tells you which.
  • Evil sudoku. The program got stuck even with these three techniques. The puzzle still has exactly one solution, but you will need longer chains of reasoning or careful trial and error.

Grids that could be solved with simpler techniques were rejected, whatever their number of given numbers.

The advanced techniques used in these puzzles

  • X-Wing. In two rows, a number can only go in the same two columns. It must then sit in opposite corners of that rectangle, so it can be removed from the other cells of those two columns. The same works with rows and columns swapped.
  • Swordfish. The same idea as the X-Wing, with three rows and three columns.
  • XY-Wing. A cell with two candidates, X and Y, sees a cell with X and Z and another cell with Y and Z. One of these two cells must contain Z, so Z can be removed from every cell that sees both of them.

Tips to solve a very hard sudoku

  • Write all the candidates in small numbers in each empty cell: the advanced techniques cannot be seen without them.
  • Update the candidates every time you place a number.
  • Exhaust the simple techniques first, then look for cells with only two candidates: they are the starting point of an XY-Wing.
  • For an X-Wing, pick one number and look for rows or columns where it has only two possible cells.
  • Use a pencil and an eraser, and print a second copy before trying a long line of reasoning.

Evil and diabolical sudoku printable: frequently asked questions

Are these evil and diabolical sudoku puzzles free to print?

Yes. The 6 puzzles on this page are free and need no account. Each PDF carries a small LogikLand footer and is for personal use.

Do the PDFs include the solutions?

Yes. Each PDF has the puzzle on page 1 and the solution on page 2. The complete pack has 12 pages: the 6 puzzles first, then the 6 solutions, so you can print the puzzles without seeing the answers.

What is the difference between diabolical and evil sudoku on this page?

Level names change from one publisher to another, so here is what they mean on this page. For a Diabolical puzzle, our checking program could not finish with singles, locked candidates and subsets: it needed at least one advanced technique, an X-Wing, an XY-Wing or a Swordfish. An Evil puzzle is harder: the program could not finish it even with these three techniques, so expect chains or careful trial and error.

Is diabolic sudoku the same as diabolical sudoku?

Yes. "Diabolic" and "diabolical" are two spellings of the same level name, used for very hard sudoku puzzles.

Does each puzzle have only one solution?

Yes. Each of the 6 grids was checked by computer and has exactly one solution. The given numbers are also placed symmetrically: the pattern looks the same when the grid is turned upside down.

How many numbers are given at the start?

From 24 to 30 numbers out of 81. The number of givens is printed under each grid. A low number of givens does not make a puzzle hard by itself: the level on this page comes from the techniques needed to solve it.

Which paper size should I use?

The PDFs are made for US Letter paper (8.5 x 11 inches), with one large grid per page. To print on A4 paper, choose the "Fit to page" option in your print window.

Can I sell or republish these puzzles?

No, the free puzzles on this page are for personal use. To publish and sell your own puzzle books, on Amazon KDP for example, commercial rights come with the LogikLand PRO and EXPERT plans.
