What is a word ladder?

A word ladder looks simple and can be surprisingly stubborn. The number of lines is the shortest we found with our word list, so there is no room for a wasted step.

Another ladder of the same length may also work, so the answer page shows one possible solution, with the changed letter in grey. Any ladder of real words with the right length is correct.

How to play Word Ladder

  • Go from the top word to the bottom word, one line at a time.
  • On each line, change exactly one letter and keep the others in place. Each line must be a real word.
  • The number of lines is the shortest we found. Another ladder of the same length may work: the solution shows one of them, with the changed letter in grey.

How to start

Compare the top and bottom words first and see which letters must change. Then work from both ends: a middle word is often easier to spot from the bottom.

The levels

LevelWhat you get
Easy3 or 4 letters, 3 or 4 steps
Medium4 or 5 letters, 5 or 6 steps
Hard4 to 6 letters, 7 to 9 steps

Tips

  • Change the vowel first when you are stuck, because many words differ by one vowel.
  • A letter may need to change twice, so do not lock it too early.
  • Children can start at Easy, with 3 or 4 letters and 3 or 4 steps.
