A math maze hides a path inside a grid of calculations. To get out, the child has to find the right answers: there is no pencil line to follow, only math. Here is how the mazes work and how they change with age, with real pages made with the free math maze generator.
What is a math maze?
The page shows a grid with a calculation in every square and a target number. The child colors every square whose answer is the target. The colored squares form a path from START to FINISH.

Math mazes by age
| Age | Grid | Calculations and target |
|---|---|---|
| 5-6 | 5 x 5 | Small additions and subtractions, target from 5 to 10 |
| 6-7 | 5 x 5 | Small additions and subtractions, target from 10 to 18 |
| 7-8 | 6 x 6 | Additions and subtractions, target from 20 to 60 |
| 8-9 | 6 x 6 | Mostly multiplication |
| 9-11 | 6 x 6 | The four operations, target up to 72 |

Why guessing the path does not work
Every wrong square has an answer close to the target: 1 to 3 away, and up to 6 away from ages 8-9. A square that looks right at first sight can be wrong, so the child has to calculate every square instead of guessing the path from its shape.
Tip
Ask the child to write the answer in small numbers in each square before coloring.
Tips
Start at START
Look at the squares next to START first: only one of them is right. Then continue square by square.
Check with the answer key
The colored path of the answer key shows at once where the child went off the way.
Other math games
A color by number with math practises the same operations with a picture to find. For plain calculations by age, see the math worksheets by age.
Questions
How does a math maze work?
The instruction gives a target number. The child works out each square and colors the ones whose answer is that number: they form the path from START to FINISH.
Can the path go diagonally?
No. The path goes from square to square through a side, never diagonally, and it never touches itself, so there is only one way.
Which ages and grades can use it?
The LogikLand generator goes from ages 5-6 to 10-11, which is Kindergarten to Grade 5.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. The answer key shows the path in color; the PDF has the maze and its answer.
